Celebrating my first year as part of the in2motivation team, I found myself thinking: How can a group of people become a successful team and still manage to maintain their success? I assume and believe that we are a successful team. I also know that we are an example for many people, the inspiration for many more and that we are a reliable partner for many others.
With this thought in mind, I think it will be helpful to share the answer to the question: what can make a group of people become a successful team? This can be applied to corporate teams or a family “team”.
Remember
The memories of a good moment can carry the same emotion as when the moment happened.
In order for that to happen, remember the times you laughed together; those moments are immortalised in your memory. Remember everything you did and how much of it was positive and fun.
Appeal to the emotions that each person on the team feels at those moments and gradually you will see the smiles returning to each of their faces as they share them. Talk about what made them happy, what helped them to trust each other and be a team.
How to do it?
Spread memories and create strong anchors. Place pictures and share videos or music that represents good times and can bring back happy memories. Allow the memories to remain alive for a long time.
Celebrate
Emotions are contagious.
Give your team the opportunity to feel appreciated. Create a special moment, a moment that everyone is going to feel recognised for their work and also a moment that the team can celebrate together. Sharing emotional moments creates complicity and trust.
How to do it?
Give a party and invite people from outside the team: family, friends, friends of friends, acquaintances. Invite everyone to celebrate with the team. Create a moment for your team to receive a round of applause.
Embrace
Each person is special and deserves to feel special.
Accept that the success of the team is a result of the combination of each person, with specific competences and personal characteristics. Your team will be stronger thanks to each person’s individuality, they complement each other and that makes for a strong team. If they were equal, they probably would be a disaster as a team. What makes a team a team is that every member combined their own energy, way of doing things, will and knowledge towards the service of others.
How to do it?
Create an identity card for each team member highlighting the individual competences and personal characteristics that contribute towards the team’s success.
Continue
What makes success does not just happen in a flash, it is an on-going search. Identify what was done, what worked and continue doing what works. Repeat and improve day by day. Integrating learning and be aware of new times and challenges.
Continuation is the secret behind every individual’s path to overcoming obstacles. Continuation may mean changing the way things are done, changing strategies, following, observing, and imagining new and different ways.
How to do it?
Meet with your team one day per month just to brainstorm about the things that each member of the team are thinking about and would like to improve in their daily work for maintaining success.
Congratulations to all successful teams!
